Biography

Abdulla A. Damluji, MD, PhD, MBA, is an interventional cardiologist and director of the Cardiovascular Center on Aging in the Tomsich Family Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, Miller Family Heart, Vascular and Thoracic Institute. He is Professor of Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University. He sees patients at Main Campus.

Specialty Interests: Interventional cardiology, structural heart disease, cardiovascular aging, geriatric cardiology, acute coronary syndromes, outcomes research in cardiovascular disease, complex coronary interventions, cardiogenic shock, valve disease management, frailty and multimorbidity in older adults

Experience: Dr. Damluji has been caring for patients with advanced and complex cardiovascular disease since 2012, with a particular interest in older adults with frailty alone or in combination with multiple diseases or multisystem dysregulation, a condition in which multiple body systems are not functioning optimally. He has performed more than 5,000 interventional and structural heart procedures, including complex percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) to open blocked heart arteries and transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR).

Dr. Damluji is board certified in internal medicine, nuclear cardiology, echocardiography  cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology. He is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology, American College of Physicians, American Heart Association and the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (SCAI). Dr. Damluji was selected to the prestigious SCAI/ACC/TCT Emerging Leaders Mentorship (ELM) Program (Class of 2022-2024) and received the Rising Star Award jointly sponsored by the American College of Cardiology, the National Institute on Aging, and the American Geriatrics Society.

Education: Dr. Damluji is a graduate of the College of Medicine of the University of Baghdad, Iraq. He completed his internal medicine internship and residency through Penn State College of Medicine at Penn State Hershey Medical Center, Hershey, PA. He was a postdoctoral fellow in clinical investigation at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimire, MD. He received his specialty training through fellowships at Jackson Memorial Hospital, Miami University School of Medicine, first in cardiology followed by interventional cardiology and structural heart disease.

Dr. Damluji also holds a PhD in clinical investigation from the Schools of Medicine and Public Health, Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, where he was a Pepper Scholar at the Johns Hopkins Claude D. Pepper Older American Independence Center and Johns Hopkins Center on Aging and Health; a master’s in epidemiology and biostatistics from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health; and an Executive MBA from the Stern School of Business, New York University, New York, where he was an EMBA Dean’s Scholar.

Dr. Damluji joined the Cleveland Clinic medical staff in 2025 from Inova Heart and Vascular Institute, Inova Health, Falls Church, VA., where he was an interventional cardiologist and director of the Inova Center for Outcomes Research and the cardiac catheterization laboratory at Inova Alexandria Hospital, Alexandria, VA.

Research, Publications and Speaking: Dr. Damluji is a dedicated clinical investigator with a special interest in managing cardiovascular disease and conditions in older people. He has been a principal investigator on multiple National Institutes of Health studies on cardiovascular aging and interventional therapies in this population and has coauthored more than 200 peer-reviewed papers published in prestigious journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine, European Heart Journal, Circulation and Journal of the American College of Cardiology. He currently serves on the editorial boards of several major cardiology journals.


Dr. Damluji frequently is invited to speak on cardiovascular aging and other current topics in interventional cardiology at leading academic medical centers. As another extension of his special interest, he has developed innovative curricula in cardiovascular aging and research for graduate students, residents and fellows. He serves as the Chair of the American Heart Association Acute Cardiac Care and General Cardiology Committee, Member of the Interventional Cardiology Committee, and CV Disease in Older Populations Committee. He is Chair Elect of the Geriatric Cardiology Leadership Council of the American College of Cardiology.
