Biography
Alex Lancaster, MD, is an orthopaedic surgeon in the Orthopaedic and Rheumatologic Institute at Cleveland Clinic. She specializes in hip and knee replacement surgery, including primary, complex and revision joint replacement.
Dr. Lancaster is originally from Indianapolis and completed her undergraduate and medical education at Indiana University (go Hoosiers!). She completed her orthopaedic surgery residency in Salt Lake City, Utah, followed by an Adult Reconstruction fellowship at Cleveland Clinic, where she focused on complex hip and knee replacement. After practicing in central Oregon, she returned to Cleveland Clinic in 2026 as a Staff Orthopaedic Surgeon.
Dr. Lancaster performs partial and total knee replacements and uses CT-based robotic technology when appropriate to help optimize surgical planning and execution. She also performs revision knee replacement and complex primary knee surgery. For hip replacement, she takes a patient-focused approach to determine the surgical technique that is best suited to each individual, including direct anterior and posterior approaches. Image-guidance and robotic assistance may be used when appropriate. Her hip practice includes primary and revision replacement as well as complex procedures, including conversion of previous hip surgeries to joint replacement.
Dr. Lancaster believes that not every patient with hip or knee arthritis needs surgery right away. For patients who may benefit from nonsurgical treatment or who are not yet ready for surgery, she and her team work with each patient to develop an individualized treatment plan and determine the right time for surgery, if needed.
She is passionate about surgical education and patient care and is an active member of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS) and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS).
Outside of work, Dr. Lancaster enjoys spending time outdoors, being with family, tackling DIY home projects, and spending time with her Goldendoodle, Finn.
