About Alexandra Melnyk

Biography

Dr. Alexandra Melnyk is an Associate Staff Physician at the Cleveland Clinic Women’s Institute in the Division of Urogynecology and Pelvic Floor Disorders. She specializes in the treatment of pelvic organ prolapse, stress urinary incontinence, overactive bladder, as well as complex pelvic health disorders like genitourinary syndrome of menopause, rectovaginal and vesicovaginal fistulas, urethral diverticula, recurrent urinary tract infections, and interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome.

Dr. Melnyk obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in History with Honors at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. She then joined Teach For America and taught high school anatomy in Phoenix Arizona, where she also earned her Master of Education from Arizona State University. She then returned home to Chicago, Illinois where she attended medical school at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine. She completed her residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology as well as her fellowship in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery at Magee-Womens Hospital, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Dr. Melnyk provides excellent care for her patients and is also passionate about improving the sustainability of the health care she provides and decreasing waste in the operating room and medicine in general. She is the Co-Founder of OBGYNs For a Sustainable Future, a national cohort group for OBGYNs interested in decreasing the carbon footprint of care. She also Co-Leads the American Urogynecologic Society Health Care Sustainability Special Interest Group. She has published commentaries and original research on health care sustainability in numerous academic journals, including the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She has presented on this topic at various national conferences, including the American Urogynecologic Society, American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists, and CleanMed. She implemented a “Greening the Urogynecology Operating Room” initiative in fellowship and won an award at the CleanMed national conference for her efforts. In addition to reducing the carbon footprint of the urogynecology, she hopes to bring health care sustainability as an issue to the front and center of the greater OBGYN community.

Dr. Melnyk sees patients in the office at Cleveland Clinic Medina Campus and Fairview Hospital. She operates at Akron General, Medina Campus, and Hillcrest Campus. Starting in January 2024 she will primarily see patients in the Southern Region, in Akron and Medina. She specializes in vaginal, laparoscopic, and robotic approaches to pelvic reconstructive surgery. Some of the procedures she performs include hysterectomy, sacrocolpopexy, uterosacral ligament suspension, vaginal reconstruction, and midurethral sling among many others. Dr. Melnyk is passionate about providing evidence-based medicine and compassionate, quality care to her patients.
