Biography

Anthony Zaki, MD, is a is a staff cardiac surgeon in the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery in the Sydell and Arnold Miller Family Heart, Vascular and Thoracic Institute (HVTI). He sees patients and performs surgery at Main Campus.

Specialty Interests: Minimally invasive valve surgery, Coronary artery disease with multi-arterial grafting, Aortic aneurysm and valve-sparing root operations, Valve surgery, Complex redo operations, Surgical cardiomyopathy, Mechanical circulatory support, Ventricular assist devices, Heart transplantation

Experience and Outcomes: Cleveland Clinic performs more than 5,000 heart surgeries each year. All Cleveland Clinic cardiac surgeons complete between 300-400 cardiac cases per year. Dr. Zaki performs more than 350 cases each year, spanning the full spectrum of cardiac surgery, including valve repair, coronary artery bypass grafting, and aortic aneurysm surgery. He has extensive experience in complex, multi-component and re-operative procedures, as well as minimally invasive, transcatheter, and hybrid approaches. His practice also includes advanced heart failure therapies such as heart transplantation and ventricular assist devices.

Research, Publications and Speaking: Dr. Zaki’s research has resulted in numerous publications in peer-reviewed medical journals and contributions to medical textbooks. He is actively involved in surgical education, leading workshops and courses nationally and internationally, participating in lecture series, and developing instructional technique videos. He has a strong interest in quality improvement and systems-based care, and values multidisciplinary collaboration, working closely with cardiology, critical care, nursing, and bioethics to improve patient outcomes and experience.

Leisure Activities: In his free time, Dr. Zaki enjoys spending time with his family, cooking, and playing basketball (and most recently, pickleball). He and his wife also share a passion for international relief work and enjoy learning about different cultures and ways of life.
