Biography
A native of Taylorsville, North Carolina, Dr. Ashley Mays received her medical education at the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina and completed her otolaryngology residency at Wake Forest University, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She completed a two-year fellowship in Head and Neck Surgical Oncology and Total Body Microvascular Reconstruction at University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, in Houston, Texas.
Throughout her training, Dr. Mays has made research contributions to head and neck oncology in both the clinical and translational realms. She has been recognized regionally by her peers for her role in cancer patient advocacy, through numerous volunteer and leadership roles.
Dr. Mays sees patients with head and neck cancer, upper aerodigestive tract lesions, and complex reconstructive deficits. She has interests in robotic surgery of the head and neck (TORS), endoscopic skull base surgery and total body microvascular reconstructive surgery.

Dr. Mays answered all of my questions with patience and clarity. She took extra time to show me some imaging results via computer and explained their meaning. Dr. Mays explained options and potential issues regarding surgery and demonstrated a high level of expertise about what I could expect. She was warm and personable and created a sense that we were in this treatment plan together.

It has always been a pleasure to see Dr Mays. Her pleasantry and cordial manner is so welcomed. She is above and beyond most Doctors nowadays. My treatment has had a positive outcome, so I will be seeing less of her but it has been great having her on my treatment plan

I have worked with four other treating physicians for this issue prior to Dr. Mays, including one head and neck surgeon. Dr. Mays was more compassionate and thorough in the fist five minutes of the exam than all of the other physicians combined. She treated me with dignity, like a whole person, not just a case. She did not downplay the seriousness of my issue like the prior surgeon. She had clear recommendations, and explained her reasoning for differing from the opinions expressed by prior physicians. She was not aloof or sterile the way some physicians can be. She inspired confidence. I trust that I am now in good hands and I am looking forward to surgery so that I can begin healing and recovery.

Dr. Mays has great bedside manner. She took the time to talk with me and thoughtfully addressed all my concerns. She did not seem rushed at all, it genuinely felt like the appointment time was dedicated to me. She was also very thorough in her examination and made sure to include my preferences in plan.
