Biography
David P. Gurd, MD is the Head of Pediatric Spinal Deformity Surgery and the Medical Director for Supply Chain Management at Cleveland Clinic. He completed his undergraduate studies at Miami University (Ohio), received his medical degree from The Ohio State University, completed orthopaedic surgery residency training at Cleveland Clinic and subspecialty fellowship training in pediatric orthopaedics at the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children in Dallas, Texas. Dr. Gurd joined the staff at Cleveland Clinic in 2007.
Dr. Gurd's main interests include scoliosis and spine deformity to include congenital conditions, infantile scoliosis, kyphosis andspondylolisthesis. He also enjoys working with pediatric trauma, lower-extremity deformity and children's hip conditions including hip dysplasia. He has specialized training in the fields of osteotomy for significant spine deformity and preservation of the hip joint in adolescents.
The majority of Dr. Gurd's practice is focused on patient care; however, he is also very active with Cleveland Clinic's Supply Chain Management and assessing the newest innovations in surgical care. Dr. Gurd is currently engaged in research being conducted to improve recovery after scoliosis surgery to increase patient mobility, function, and pain control. In addition, he is working on a new modality to improve the ease of pedicle screw placement for the surgeon and enhance patient safety when undergoing spine surgery.
