Biography
Eduardo Fernandes, MD, is a distinguished transplant and hepatobiliary surgeon at Cleveland Clinic Florida. His surgical upbringing reflects the one of a truly ‘global’ surgeon.
He graduated from University of Rome ‘La Sapienza’ magna cum laude.
He trained in general surgery within the London deanery school of surgery before joining the surgical residency program of the University of Illinois at Chicago.
He is board certified in general surgery and he is a fellow of both the American and the Royal College of Surgeons.
He has undergone extensive subspecialty training in HPB surgery at Kings’ College Hospital (London, UK), robotic surgery at University of Illinois at Chicago and Liver and Kidney transplantation at the Cleveland Clinic, Ohio.
Dr Fernandes has dedicated his career to the integration of basic sciences and clinical practice which he believes to be the key to fast medical and surgical advancements. He is a PhD laureate from Imperial College London University where he defended a thesis on transplantation tolerance.
He is currently investigating platform optimization of normothermic machine perfusion, a research field that is offering new insights and techniques that greatly benefit all patients undergoing liver transplantation at the Cleveland Clinic.
In recognition of his contributions, Dr. Fernandes has received numerous awards and accolades. He is a member of many national and international associations, including the ASTS, AHPBA and the CRSA, of which he is an executive member.
At Cleveland Clinic Weston Hospital, Dr. Fernandes is part of a team that is at the forefront of transplant surgery. His dedication to his craft and his patients is unwavering and he continues to strive to offer the highest quality service through the integration of excellent surgical skills, evidenced based medicine and translational research.
