Geoffrey Ouma, DO, MS, FSVM, RPVI, is a vascular disease specialist in the Tomsich Family Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, Sydell and Arnold Miller Family Heart, Vascular and Thoracic Institute. He sees patients at Cleveland Clinic Main Campus.

Specialty Interests: Peripheral artery disease (PAD), especially evaluation of limb pain and medical management of claudication; cardiovascular/atherosclerosis risk factor modification in PAD and carotid artery disease/stroke; evaluation and medical management of patients undergoing non-cardiac vascular surgery; limb swelling and chronic venous insufficiency, lipedema, lymphedema, varicose veins, arteriovenous/capillary venous malformations; endovascular therapy for varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency; complex venous thromboembolism, pulmonary embolism, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), high-risk thrombophilia, complex atherothromboembolism, post-thrombotic syndrome, May-Thurner syndrome, thoracic outlet syndrome, DVT in pregnancy; coagulopathies; management of inferior vena cava filters and noninvasive vascular disease testing; lower extremity wounds.

Experience: The Section of Vascular Medicine in Cleveland Clinic’s Tomsich Family Department of Cardiovascular Medicine offers comprehensive care for diseases of the vascular and lymphatic systems, including hypercoagulable disorders. The section is home to one of the most active vascular laboratories in the country, with more than 2,200 clinical studies performed per month.

Dr. Ouma has more than 10 years’ experience in diagnosing and managing the full range of blood vessel and lymphatic disorders and has treated more than 1,500 patients with venous leg ulcers. His expertise also includes the diagnosis and management of less common vascular disorders such as thromboangiitis obliterans (TAO), fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD), the vasculitides, vasospastic disorders, blue/cold fingers and toes and arterial aneurysm. He is board certified in internal medicine, vascular medicine and wound healing, holds certification in hyperbaric oxygen therapy and is a Registered Physician in Vascular Interpretation (RPVI). Dr. Ouma is a Fellow of the Society for Vascular Medicine.

Education: Dr. Ouma earned his medical degree from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, Erie Pa. He completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee Clinical Campus/Aurora-Sinai Medical Center, Milwaukee, Wis., followed by a fellowship in vascular medicine at Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. During his fellowship, Dr. Ouma earned a master’s degree in translational research from Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. In 2014 and ‘15 he completed specialized trainings in hyperbaric medicine and wound care medicine.

In 2018 Dr. Ouma participated in a medical mission to Kenya with the organization Hands International. Prior to joining the Cleveland Clinic medical staff in 2020, he was on the staff of Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia.

Publications and Speaking: Dr. Ouma has coauthored papers in peer-reviewed medical journals on peripheral artery disease and limb ischemia and presented abstracts on vascular medicine topics at medical meetings. He served as an editor and contributed a chapter to Atlas of Vascular Medicine: A Case-Based Approach to Current Management (2011) and coauthored a chapter in a leading vascular surgery textbook on hypertension as a risk factor for atherosclerosis.

About Dr. Ouma: “I enjoy the field of vascular medicine because patients often present with uncommon vascular diseases that other physicians have not been able to diagnose. It is always gratifying to help patients finally get answers to their medical problems. I immediately witness how I have been part of relieving their worries and anxiety. Although the majority of these vascular ailments are benign, they are worrisome and annoying and, therefore, difficult for a patient to ignore.

Leisure Activities: In his leisure time, Dr. Ouma enjoys playing the guitar, listening to music, cooking Kenyan food, travelling with his family and playing pick-up soccer games.

    Dr.Ouma is very personable. He was great at explaining my condition as it was a new diagnosis. He took time to show me a device on line that will make it easier to put the compression stockings on. I felt as though he cared about my well being .
