Biography

Justin R. Lappen, MD is the Section Head of Maternal Fetal Medicine at Cleveland Clinic and is an Associate Professor of Reproductive Biology at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine, Case Western Reserve University. Dr. Lappen received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics from Columbia University and his Medical Degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He completed residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Prentice Women's Hospital, Northwestern University School of Medicine and fellowship in Maternal Fetal Medicine at MetroHealth Medical Center, Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.

Dr. Lappen has a passion for interdisciplinary clinical work and research at the intersection of Obstetrics and Critical Care medicine, including maternal cardiac disease, sepsis, and placenta accreta spectrum disorders. He has completed numerous observational studies and prospective trials on obstetric early warning systems and the evaluation of maternal volume status, as well as research in other areas of Obstetrics and Maternal Fetal Medicine. He is the funded principal investigator for a state-wide quality initiative focused on reducing maternal morbidity/mortality and barriers to care related to hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. He has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals, received institutional research grants, and serves as a reviewer for multiple journals in Obstetrics and Maternal Fetal Medicine. Dr. Lappen has served on national committees including the National Partnership for Maternal Safety Committee on Vital Sign Triggers and holds national leadership roles as a member of the Reproductive Health Services Advisory Group and Publications Committee through the Society for Maternal Fetal Medicine.
