Biography
Karen F. Murray, MD, is the Chair, Department of Medical Specialties, Children’s Institute, Cleveland Clinic (CC) DeBartolo Family Endowed Chair of Pediatrics Vice Chair of Research, Cleveland Clinic Children’s Professor and Chair, Department of Pediatrics, CC Lerner College of Medicine of CWRU. She received her MD from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and did a pediatrics residency and a chief resident year at Seattle Children's. She completed a clinical and research fellowship in gastroenterology in the combined program at Boston Children's Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School. Dr. Murray is certified in General Pediatrics, Pediatric Gastroenterology, and Pediatric Transplant Hepatology. Dr. Murray currently serves on the Quality Committee of the CC Quality Alliance, the Clinical Research Committee, and is the Chair of the Children’s Institute Artificial Intelligence Committee as well as the Pediatric Medical Specialties Executive Committee. Outside of CC she is a hepatology research consultant to Albireo Pharma, serves on the Board of Directors of ImproveCareNow, a healthcare learning network, and is President-Elect of the North American Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition Foundation.

Professional Highlights
Prior to coming to Cleveland Clinic Children's Dr. Murray was Professor and Division Chief of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Hepatology, and Vice Chair of Clinical Affairs for the Department of Pediatrics, University of Washington School of Medicine and Seattle Children’s Hospital; she also served as Interim-Chair of the Department of Pediatrics for the University of Washington 2018-2019, had served as President of the Seattle Children’s medical staff, and on the founding Board of the Seattle Children's Clinically Integrated Network. Dr. Murray chaired the Gastroenterology Sub-board of the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) and served on the New Subspecialties Committee of the ABP from 2012-2018. In addition to clinical care in gastroenterology and transplantation, she had an active clinical research program in hepatology with main focuses is in the treatment and pathophysiology of childhood liver disease, the treatment of hepatitis B and C viral infections, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and cholestatic liver diseases in childhood. She was on the steering committees of three National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases clinical research networks related to her research, and served as President of the North American Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition from 2018-2020.
