Biography
Dr. Katherine Heiden is an endocrine surgeon who specializes in surgery of the thyroid and parathyroid glands, with particular expertise in thyroid cancer, parathyroid disease, and complex re-operative thyroid and parathyroid surgery. She graduated summa cum laude from Princeton University and earned her medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons. She completed her general surgery residency at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center, followed by a Comprehensive Endocrine Surgery Fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic, after which she achieved board certification from the American Board of Surgery.
Dr. Heiden previously served as Head of the Section of Endocrine Surgery at Rush University Medical Center from 2010 to 2019. She subsequently rejoined the Department of Endocrine Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic, where she maintains a high-volume endocrine surgery practice that includes in-office ultrasounds, fine needle aspiration of the thyroid, and laryngoscopy to evaluate vocal cords.
Beyond her clinical practice, Dr. Heiden is deeply committed to medical education, research, and health systems improvement. She is an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University and serves as Director of Education for the Department of Endocrine Surgery. In addition, she is the leader of Enterprise Access Transformation for the Integrated Surgical Institute, where she focuses on improving patient access and experience while optimizing health outcomes.
Dr. Heiden is actively involved in both clinical and basic science research, with interests that include thyroid cancer, the molecular biology and molecular profiling of thyroid malignancies, genetic predisposition to parathyroid disease, and improving the diagnosis and treatment of parathyroid disease in large populations. She is an active member of several professional organizations, including the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons, the American College of Surgeons, and the Central Surgical Association.
