Biography
Dr. Townsend is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine. She received her undergraduate degree at Queen’s University in Canada. She subsequently attended St. George’s University School of Medicine, where she received her MD. She completed her pediatric residency and pediatric cardiology fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic and completed her training in advanced training in heart failure and transplant at Stollery Children’s Hospital, the primary center for advanced heart failure care for children in western Canada. She subsequently returned to the Cleveland Clinic in 2022 and has been an active clinician, researcher and educator there since. She specializes in the management of pediatric cardiomyopathy, heart failure, mechanical circulatory support devices and heart transplantation. She established and serves as the director of the Pediatric Heart Transplant multidisciplinary THRIVE clinic and leads the Pediatric Inherited Cardiomyopathy clinic.
Dr. Townsend has presented at national and international meetings, authored many research publications and participates in national committees committed to advancing the care of children with heart failure. Her research interests focus on improving long-term outcomes for children diagnosed with heart failure and requiring heart transplantation. She has been the recipient twice of the Enduring Hearts/Pediatric Heart Transplant Society (PHTS) Investigator Award as well as the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT) Pediatric Professional Community Award for Excellence. She is an active member of the principal pediatric heart failure and transplant societies, including the PHTS, ACTION (Advanced Heart Failure Improving Outcome Network), ISHLT, and ASAIO (American Society for Artificial Internal Organs).
