Biography
Dr. Maryam Valapour is Director of Lung Transplant Outcomes at Cleveland Clinic and a nationally recognized transplant pulmonologist, physician-scientist, and leader in transplant outcomes research and policy.
An NIH-funded investigator, Dr. Valapour has spent over two decades advancing research focused on improving the U.S. transplant system and outcomes for patients with advanced lung disease. Her work develops methodologies to assess disease progression in lung transplant candidates, optimize transplant timing, and evaluate how organ allocation strategies affect patient and population survival.
Dr. Valapour also serves as Principal Investigator for the Coordinating Center of the Cystic Fibrosis Lung Transplant Consortium (CFLTC), a collaborative network of 15 North American institutions dedicated to studying chronic lung allograft dysfunction and developing new therapies to improve lung transplant outcomes.
In addition to her research leadership, Dr. Valapour serves as Senior Staff for Lung Transplantation at the U.S. Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (SRTR), where she helps oversee national transplant outcomes analyses and refinement of the U.S. lung allocation system. In this role, she serves as scientific advisor to the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN) Lung Committee.
Dr. Valapour earned her medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina and completed residency training in Internal Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University. She completed fellowships in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine and in Bioethics and Health Policy at Johns Hopkins University; and earned a master’s degree in public policy from the University of Minnesota.
