About Matthew Long

Biography

Matthew Long, MD, is an electrophysiology cardiologist in the Section of Regional Cardiovascular Medicine of The Tomsich Family Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute. He sees ambulatory patients at Richard E. Jacobs Health Center and Lorain Family Health and Surgery Center and inpatients at Fairview and Avon hospitals.

Specialty Interests: Abnormal heart rhythms, including atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, atrial tachycardia, bradyarrhythmia and supraventricular tachycardia; sudden cardiac death; sinus node dysfunction; syncope

Experience: Dr. Long is experienced in the application of minimally invasive, catheter-based interventions to treat all forms of heart rhythm disorders. As a clinical cardiac electrophysiology fellow, he performed more than 150 ablations and more than 200 device implants.

He is board certified in internal medicine and cardiovascular disease.

Education: Dr. Long is a graduate of Indiana University School of Medicine, Indianapolis. He served his internal medicine residency at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, followed by a general cardiology fellowship at Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), Charleston, S.C. He completed his training with a fellowship in clinical cardiac electrophysiology at MUSC, serving as co-chief fellow in his final year, and joined the Cleveland Clinic regional medical staff on its completion.

Research, Publications and Speaking: Dr. Long has coauthored papers published in leading peer-reviewed medical journals, as well as sections on heart rhythm disorders in the Johns Hopkins Osler Medical Handbook for clinicians.

About Dr. Long: “I consider it a privilege to take care of patients who suffer from heart rhythm disorders, which can be challenging to manage and even cause sudden death. The most gratifying part of my job is being able to alleviate this suffering and prevent sudden death. I am committed to doing this with excellence for each of my patients.”

Leisure Activities: Outside of medicine, Dr. Long enjoys spending time with his three children, playing the guitar, rock climbing and traveling.
