Biography
Rony R. Sayegh, MD, joined the Cleveland Clinic Cole Eye Institute in 2020. He is a cornea specialist with a focus on ocular surface diseases and surgeries. He earned his medical degree from the American University of Beirut, followed by completion of his residency training at the University of Maryland in Baltimore. He then joined the Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary for a two-year fellowship in Cornea & Refractive Surgery. After graduating, Dr. Sayegh joined the faculty Case Western Reserve University and University Hospitals, prior to joining the Cleveland Clinic in Abu Dhabi, and then in Ohio.
Clinical Interests
Dr. Sayegh does general eye examination and cares for a wide variety of corneal diseases, including dry eye syndrome, ocular neuropathic pain, corneal infections, autoimmune conditions and dystrophies, such as Fuchs disease and keratoconus. He performs routine and complex cataract surgery, anterior segment surgeries that include full-thickness and partial-thickness corneal transplantation, as well as refractive surgery. In addition, he performs the Boston Keratoprosthesis, or artificial cornea transplantation surgery to restore vision in eyes that cannot be helped with a regular corneal transplant.
Research Interests
Dr. Sayegh’s research focuses on dry eye, specifically the ocular neuropathic pain component. He is part of the Dry Eye Assessment and Management (DREAM) Study group and led the ocular pain subgroup of the study. He was the first to describe neuromodulation techniques for the treatment of the recalcitrant form of ocular pain, in collaboration with the neurosurgical and pain medicine departments. He continues to work on developing better ways of diagnosing and treating this debilitating condition.
In addition, Dr. Sayegh works closely with the biomedical engineering department at the Case Western Reserve University, and has published extensively on the optics of the Boston Keratoprosthesis. His work has helped find better designs and ways to perform the surgery, leading to improved outcomes.
