He was named to the Cleveland Clinic medical staff in 2019.
Specialty Interests: Catheter ablation and management of supraventricular tachycardias, pulmonary vein isolation and left atrial flutter ablation, ventricular tachycardia; transvenous and leadless pacemaker insertion; implantable cardiac defibrillator (ICD) and cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) device implantation management and lead extraction; implantation of left atrial appendage occluder device (Watchman)
Education: Dr. Taigen earned his medical degree from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, Farmington, Conn., where he received the Carl F. Hinz Outstanding Scholarship in Internal Medicine Award upon graduation. He completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Virginia Health System, Charlottesville, Va. In his final year of training there Dr. Taigen served as chief resident and created and launched the University of Virginia Journal of Medicine. He completed his specialty and subspecialty training at Cleveland Clinic with a fellowship in cardiovascular medicine followed by a fellowship in electrophysiology. He was chief electrophysiology fellow in his final fellowship year. .
Experience: Physicians in the Section of Cardiac Rhythm and Pacing in the Tomsich Family Department of Cardiovascular Medicine performed more than 5,600 electrophysiology procedures in 2018 for the diagnosis and management of cardiac rhythm disorders. Before joining Cleveland Clinic Dr. Taigen annually performed approximately 100 pacemaker, ICD and biventricular device implants/yr; 250 ablations/yr; 25 left atrial appendage occluder device (Watchman) implants/yr; and 30 lead extractions/yr.
Research and Publications: Dr. Taigen has been principal investigator on multiple clinical trials, including most recently two trials evaluating the Watchman device and hybrid ablation of atrial fibrillation. ASAP – TOO is a global study to establish the safety and effectiveness of the Watchman device for left atrial appendage closure in reducing the risk of stroke in patients with certain kinds of atrial fibrillation who are not suitable for anti-coagulation therapy. Converge is a global investigation to compare two different ablation techniques in patients with persistent atrial fibrillation. He has published papers in scientific journals related to atrial fibrillation, implantable cardioverter-defibrillator safety and intracellular signaling mechanisms in cardiomyocyte hypertrophy and heart failure and written chapters in medical textbooks on management of cardiac arrhythmia.
About Dr. Taigen: “I enjoy cardiac electrophysiology because it allows me to practice using the most advanced, cutting-edge technology in medicine and still maintain a primary focus on long-term continuity of care. Much of what we do in EP is confusing and scary to our patients. And so perhaps the most gratifying aspect comes from gaining a patient’s trust and knowing that all of the hard work and commitment to provide the best possible care can make a profound difference in their lives.”
Leisure Activities: Dr. Taigen enjoys family time, fly-fishing, baseball, and keeping up with the early-morning #DTD running crew in Shaker Heights.
